This week I'm featuring the first story I ever published, "Dear Daddy, Dear Kristen." I remember how upset I was when it came out and I discovered that it had been edited. But when I re-read it as I was preparing the story for my website, I recognized that it needed editing. Back in those days I was more concerned about word count than I was about making sure that every word advanced the story, and it was obvious that the plot had been shamelessly padded. So, I did what any good writer in their right mind would do, I edited it myself before posting it here. The difference between my edits and those of the magazine is that my edits preserved the voice of the narrator and the pacing of the story, while the magazine's edits jarred.
