MEET ETHAN RILEY JAMES

Ethan, who goes by his middle name, Riley, or his last name, James, for business purposes, is currently serving in the United States Air Force as a Staff Sergeant.  Ethan has served our country for nearly five years and will soon be re-enlisting for another four.  Ethan's ultimate goal, in addition to promoting his new book, is to join the Air Force EOD (Explosive Ordinance Disposal) Team.

We wish Ethan well, and thank him for his service!

TELL US ABOUT YOUR NEW BOOK.

It's a Science Fiction Novel taking place on an alternate world with a dip of magic added into it. Taking place during the end of a near decade long conflict between humanity and the Seraphim, who are humans with the ability to cast magic. Humanity wants to end the dragged-out conflict and activates the Hunter Program, a group of super soldiers to end the war by hunting down the leader of the conflict.

HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THE TITLE FOR THIS BOOK?

I wanted to build something that I could consider series worthy. Eventually, through discussing with my roommate. I came up with the title.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO WRITE THIS BOOK? IS IT PART OF A SERIES?

I wanted to have a book of my own to cross off my bucket list. But it ended up being an addictive experience to write my own story and characters. It does have a sequel and prequel on the way.  Ultimately, there will be a total of 6 novels in the series.

HOW MUCH OF YOUR BOOK IS BASED ON YOUR OWN EXPERIENCES OR THOSE OF SOMEONE YOU KNOW?

Not much to be honest.  However, there are a handful of nods to my personal life in here that gave me some ideas to write about.

WHAT KIND OF RESEARCH WENT INTO WRITING YOUR BOOK?

Several restless nights. I wanted to create a science fiction world that could be grounded while keeping some of my favorite aspects into it. Mecha being one -- I had to make them believable, giant armed robots with pilots, while also including magic. With Magic, it's not an all-knowing entity, it isn't worshiped, at least not publicly. People are scared of it, and will do anything to protect themselves from it. I wanted to create a world that would mold and shape over time.

IS THERE ANYTHING YOU WOULD CHANGE ABOUT YOUR BOOK?

Minor things here or there. I'm actually rewriting the sequel because I was disappointed with the product. So that will be coming out in the next couple months.

IF YOUR BOOK WOULD BE MADE INTO A FILM, WHO WOULD YOU LIKE TO PLAY THE LEADS?

I'd like it to be animated truthfully with Matthew Mercer and Laura Bailey taking the main lead as voice actors.

WHEN AND WHY DID YOU BEGIN WRITING?

Middle school.   I loved action movies and video games and I wanted to make something like that on my own. My first book was pretty terrible, honestly, and it took nearly a decade to streamline into what I have today. I'm proud of it and myself.

WHEN DID YOU FIRST CONSIDER YOURSELF A WRITER?

Around 2014. I was avidly working on several projects that went nowhere and I didn't seriously considering publishing until 2018. By then, I had an adequate product that I considered to be my first true novel.

DESCRIBE YOUR WRITING STYLE.

Very improvisational.   I like to adapt to the situation as it comes up in the story. When it comes to fight scenes, I like to play them out in the office to see how they would translate to the story. I love to do MMA so it makes it easier. Weapons are my bread and butter. I use them quite often and I like to translate proper terminology to my writing.

WHAT IS THE HARDEST LESSON YOU HAD TO LEARN AS A WRITER?

That what I write isn't for everyone. It was hard, but I learned.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE CHALLENGES YOU FACE AS A WRITER?

Getting the motivation to write

WHO WAS YOUR FIRST PUBLISHER AND WHAT DID YOU LEARN FROM THEM?

Solstice Publishing and I am honored to be a part of that team. What I learned is that it takes time.

DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR NEW WRITERS?

It's not a sprint, it's a marathon. Don't expect success overnight

WHO ARE YOUR FAVORITE WRITERS?

Tom Clancy is a big one, also Nicolas Sansbury Smith.

WHAT ARE YOU READING NOW?

The Metro Series by Dmitry Glukhosky and Halo: Silent Storm by Troy Denning

IF YOU COULD MEET ANYONE WHO EVER LIVED, PAST OR PRESENT, WHO WOULD THAT BE?

My Dad who tragically passed away back in 2002.

WHAT KIND OF MUSIC TOUCHES YOUR SOUL?

I'm a big Rock and Roll guy with a touch of Metal as well.

Major Serena Kiriaga, a hero for the Europan Alliance has proven her loyalty time and time again and is given praise for being the Angel of Blood. However she is just one of many soldiers fighting in the Seraphim Rebellions, a nine year conflict against Magic-influenced beings who attempted to destroy humanity.

With the war dragging on day by day and year by year, it seems that the blood filled conflict could last for eternity. However, the Major is given an assignment that goes above her own chain of command and could possibly end the War itself. An assassination mission to kill the Leader of the Seraph. A mission that, if it fails, could mean the extinction of humanity.
